It was late into the summer of 1963 and the Civil Rights Movement had quickened its pace. There had been a march on Washington; the Vietnam war was tearing America apart, and African countries were beginning to break the oppressive yokes and evils of colonialism. The duality of the political revolution in America and the struggles for independence in Africa had also awakened the “talking drums”, the ancestral voice of our protagonist Mose Jackson. For him, the pulsating rhythms and cadence were new, as they raced through him, pounding relentlessly in his head and heart. He was not sure about the “pull” he feels from Africa, but he knows he will go.
